Oracle Real Application ClustersDigital Press ISBN: 1555582885 781 pages October 22, 2003 CHM 13 Mb

Clustered configuration first hit the scene nearly 20 years ago when Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) introduced the VaxCluster. Until now, the topic of Real Application Clusters (RAC) implementation had never been fully explored. For the first time, Murali Vallath dissects RAC mysteries in his book Oracle Real Application Clusters to enlighten and educate readers on the internals of RAC operations, cache fusion, fusion recovery processes and the fast reconfiguration of RAC.This book provides comprehensive coverage of the features, technology and principles of RAC that is part of the Oracle9i release of Oracle's RDBMS product. It is divided into three main parts: application/database design, development and maintenance life cycles. Compared to its predecessor OPS, the architecture behind RAC implementation have changed significantly. Vallath discusses Oracle9i features in a RAC implementation with respect to usage and design considerations, as well as those parameters that are and are not applicable. Areas covered include partitioning, indexes, tablespace management, transaction management, backup and recovery principles. Performance tuning with examples, troubleshooting and problem solving scenarios are covered in detail, as well as discussions on the migration process from a single instance database to RAC and migration from an OPS implementation to RAC.Oracle Real Application Clusters takes readers through a logical flow from RAC concepts to operations, covering each facet with a fine-tooth comb. Oracle SQL Tuning Pocket Reference by Mark Gurry

Oracle SQL Tuning Pocket Reference by Mark GurryPublisher: O'Reilly Media; Pocket edition (November 15, 2001) | ISBN-10: 0596002688 | PDF | 1 Mb | 112 pages

One of the most important challenges faced by Oracle database administrators and Oracle developers is the need to tune SQL statements so that they execute efficiently. Poorly tuned SQL statements are one of the leading causes of substandard database performance and poor response time. SQL statements that perform poorly result in frustration for users, and can even prevent a company from serving its customers in a timely manner. In this book, Mark Gurry shares his in-depth knowledge of Oracle's SQL statement optimizers. Mark's knowledge is the result of many hard-fought tuning battles during his many years of providing Oracle tuning services to clients. Mark provides insights into the workings of the rule-based optimizer that go well beyond what the rules tell you. Mark also provides solutions to many common problems that occur with both the rule-based and cost-based optimizers. In addition to the specific problem/solution scenarios for the optimizers, Mark provides a number of handy SQL tuning tips. He discusses the various optimizer hints, telling you when they can be used to good effect. Finally, Mark discusses the use of the DBMS_STATS package to manage database statistics, and the use of outlines to specify execution plans for SQL statements in third-party applications that you can't otherwise modify.

Java Programming with Oracle SQLJ

Book DescriptionIf you're a Java programmer working in an Oracle environment, you're probably familiar with JDBC as a means of accessing data within an Oracle database. SQLJ takes you further, allowing you to access a database using embedded SQL statements. Java Programming with Oracle SQLJ shows you how to get the most out of SQLJ.Layered on top of JDBC, SQLJ greatly simplifies database programming. Rather than make several calls to the JDBC API just to execute a simple SQL statement, SQLJ executes that statement simply by embedding it within the Java code.In this book, Jason Price explains SQLJ programming from a task-oriented point of view. You'll learn how to:* Embed queries and other SQL statements within Java programs* Deploy SQLJ code not only on client machines, but also to JServer--Oracle's Java engine built into the database* Use advanced techniques for working with collections, streams, large objects, and database objects, all without leaving the comfort of the SQLJ environment* Tune SQLJ programs for maximum performanceThroughout the book, the exposition of SQLJ and SQLJ programming techniques reflects the author's many years of professional experience as a programmer and consultant. Examples are first-rate, enabling you to learn SQLJ in no time. If you're writing Java code to access an Oracle database, you can't afford not to know about SQLJ.Book InfoMoves from the basics of getting connected and issuing SQL statements to advanced topics such as streams and multi-threading. Softcover. Reviewer: J.D.Withington "jdwithington" (San Jose, USA) My knowledge of Oracle and Java is beginner/intermediate level and I like this book a lot.The book explains how SQLJ relates to SQL, PL/SQL, Java, JDBC and it provides a good introduction to the JDeveloper IDE (Integrated Development Environment). The book is written very clearly and the appearance and organization of the text is well up to the O'Reilly standard.I can't comment on the worked examples yet as I have not yet tried them out.

Advanced Oracle PL/SQL Programming with Packages (Nutshell Handbook)

Book Description

Steven Feuerstein's first book, Oracle PL/SQL Programming, has become the classic reference to PL/SQL, Oracle's procedural extension to its SQL language. His new book looks thoroughly at one especially advanced and powerful part of the PL/SQL language -- the package. The use of packages can dramatically improve your programming productivity and code quality, while preparing you for object-oriented development in Oracle technology. In this book, Feuerstein explains how to construct packages -- and how to build them the right way. His "best practices" for building packages will transform the way you write packages and help you get the most out of the powerful, but often poorly understood, PL/SQL language.Much more than a book, Advanced Oracle PL/SQL Programming with Packages comes with a PC diskette containing a full-use software companion. Developed by Feuerstein, RevealNet's PL/Vision Lite is the first of its kind for PL/SQL developers: a library of thirty-plus PL/SQL packages. The packages solve a myriad of common programming problems and vastly accelerate the development of modular and maintainable applications. The packages provided in PL/Vision Lite fall into three categories:* Building block packages: low-level development enhancers, including string parsers, a list manager, and an interface to PL/SQL tables.* Developer utilities: programs that improve your PL/SQL development environment, including a code generator, a powerful substitute for SHOW ERRORS, and an online help delivery mechanism.* Plug-and-play components: pieces of code that can be used as is in your own applications, including a high-level exception handler mechanism and a generic, reusable logging mechanism. In addition to describing the details of these packages, this book explores why and how they were built the way they were. You'll come away with an increased appreciation of the PL/SQL language and the power of packages. Most importantly, you'll be ready and eager to put that power to use immediately in your own applications.Book InfoLooks thoroughly at one especially advanced part of the PL/SQL language - the package, the use of which can dramatically improve programming productivity and code quality. Explains how to construct packages and how to build them the right way. Paper. 3 1/2 inch disk included.

This is a defining book on the Oracle database for any developer or DBA who works with Oracle-driven database applications. Tom has a simple philosophy: you can treat Oracle as a black box and just stick data into it or you can understand how it works and exploit it as a powerful computing environment. If you choose the latter, then you will find that there are few information management problems that you cannot solve quickly and elegantly.Expert Oracle Database Architecture is the first of a three-book series that completely explores and defines the Oracle database. It covers all of the most important Oracle architecture features, including:— Files, memory structures and processes — Locking and latching — Transactions, concurrency and multi-versioning — Tables and Indexes — Datatypes — Partitioning and parallelism Each feature is taught in a proof-by-example manner, not only discussing what it is, but also how it works, how to implement software using it, and the common pitfalls associated with it.This fully revised edition covers both the 9i and 10g versions. It also comes with a CD containing a searchable PDF of the 8i version of the book.Tom has fully revised and expanded the architecture-related sections from Expert One-on-One Oracle (a searchable PDF of which is included on the CD accompanying this book), and added substantial new material. He focuses solely on 9i and 10g architecture in this book and refers to the CD for 8i-specific details. The number of changes will surprise you.In summary, this book provides a one-stop resource containing deep wisdom on the design, development and administration of Oracle applications, written by one of the world's foremost Oracle experts, Thomas Kyte.

Building Oracle XML Applications

Aimed at Oracle professionals planning or doing XML work, this in-depth guide, covering Oracle8 and Oracle8i, comes from Oracle's lead XML technical evangelist, Steve Muench. No prior knowledge of XML is required to dive into the book, but readers are assumed to be familiar with SQL and with programming using Java or PL/SQL.Building Oracle XML Applications introduces XML, gives an overview of Oracle XML technologies, and shows what they do and how they fit together. There is a focus on JDeveloper, Oracle's Java and XML development tool, which can be installed from the CD-ROM, and there are plenty of hands-on examples of how to use it. Then there are chapters on processing XML with PL/SQL or Java, transforming XML with XSLT, publishing data with XSQL pages, generating datagrams (XML documents used for exchanging data), and techniques for storing and loading XML data. The final section concentrates on Oracle XML applications, and topics include an XSQL publishing framework, Java extension functions, and using XSQL and XSLT to build personalized portals and discussion forums. This fast-paced handbook is packed with example code. The presentation is clear, and the technical content is based on the author's deep knowledge of Oracle in general and XML technologies in particular. Highly recommended. --Tim Anderson, Amazon.co.ukBook DescriptionA hands-on tutorial in using XML, XSLT, and XPath, showing how to use them with Oracle using Java, PL/SQL, and declarative techniques. The CD-ROM contains JDeveloper 3.1 for Windows NT or 2000, an integrated development environment for Java. Softcover. DLC: XML (Software markup language).

Oracle SQL*Loader: The Definitive Guide

Oracle SQL*Loader: The Definitive GuideO'Reilly Media 2001 272 pages ISBN-10: 1565929489 PDF 1.61 MB

SQL*Loader is a ubiquitous tool in the Oracle world. It has been shipped with Oracle since at least Version 6 and continues to be supported and enhanced with each new version of Oracle, including Oracle8 and Oracle8i. The job of SQL*Loader is to load data from flat files into an Oracle database. It's optimized for loading large volumes of data, and is flexible enough to handle virtually any input format. Almost every Oracle user has to use SQL*Loader at one time or another, and DBAs are frequently called upon to load data for the users in their organization. Despite SQL*Loader's wide availability and usage, few DBAs and developers know how to get the most out of it. Oracle SQL*Loader: The Definitive Guide has everything you need to know to put SQL*Loader to its best use: an introduction to SQL*Loader, a reference to all of its syntax options, and most importantly, step-by-step instructions for all the SQL*Loader tasks you'd want to perform--and maybe some you didn't realize you COULD perform. You'll learn how to construct the necessary control files and load from different types of files containing different types of data (e.g., fixed-width data, delimited data, and data of various datatypes). You'll also learn how to validate data, load it selectively, transform it as it is loaded, and recover after failure. This book explains how to optimize SQL*Loader performance by adjusting the transaction size and using the new direct path option. It also covers the newest SQL*Loader features--the loading of large object (LOB) columns and the new object types (nested tables, varying arrays, and object tables). Oracle SQL*Loader: The Definitive Guide is an indispensable resource for anyone who is new to SQL*Loader; a task-oriented learning tool for those who are already using it; and a quick reference for every user. If you want to take best advantage of an essential Oracle tool, you need this book.

Oracle PL/SQL for DBAs

PL/SQL, Oracle's powerful procedural language, has been the cornerstone of Oracle application development for nearly 15 years. Although primarily a tool for developers, PL/SQL has also become an essential tool for database administration, as DBAs take increasing responsibility for site performance and as the lines between developers and DBAs blur.Until now, there has not been a book focused squarely on the language topics of special concern to DBAs Oracle PL/SQL for DBAs fills the gap. Covering the latest Oracle version, Oracle Database 10g Release 2 and packed with code and usage examples, it contains:A quick tour of the PL/SQL language, providing enough basic information about language fundamentals to get DBAs up and runningExtensive coverage of security topics for DBAs: Encryption (including both traditional methods and Oracle's new Transparent Data Encryption, TDE); Row-Level Security(RLS), Fine-Grained Auditing (FGA); and random value generationMethods for DBAs to improve query and database performance with cursors and table functionsCoverage of Oracle scheduling, which allows jobs such as database monitoring andstatistics gathering to be scheduled for regular executionUsing Oracle's built-in packages (DBMS_CRYPTO, DBMS_RLS, DBMS_FGA, DBMS_RANDOM,DBMS_SCHEDULING) as a base, the book describes ways of building on top of these packages to suit particular organizational needs. Authors are Arup Nanda, Oracle Magazine 2003 DBA of the Year, and Steven Feuerstein, the world's foremost PL/SQL expert and coauthor of the classic reference, Oracle PL/SQL Programming.DBAs who have not yet discovered how helpful PL/SQL can be will find this book a superb introduction to the language and its special database administration features. Even if you have used PL/SQL for years, you'll find the detailed coverage in this book to be an invaluable resource.

CramMaster: ORACLE

Database software companies such as IBM and Microsoft may be challenging Oracle for market share but the #2 software company, led by combative CEO Larry Ellison, still lays claim to market share leadership. In a recent report cited by Oracle, 59 percent of CIOs surveyed by Morgan Stanley named Oracle as their primary enterprise database software. For database administrators (DBAs), developers and others, the widespread use of Oracle software isn't exactly breaking news. Their jobs, to a certain extent, depend on it. In fact, employers view Oracle certification as one of the most important ways to demonstrate expertise with databases of all kinds. Like other companies, Oracle promotes statistics to back up the importance of certification. According to the company, 97 percent of Oracle Certified Professionals (OCPs) say they have benefited from certification, while 89 percent say they gained confidence in their Oracle expertise as a result of certification. What's more, 96 percent would recommend the program to others. Employers benefit, too: Companies advocating certification report 49 percent less downtime.

Mastering Oracle SQL, 2nd Edition

Mastering Oracle SQL, 2nd EditionO'Reilly Media, Inc.; 2 edition ISBN: 0596006322 494 pages June 22, 2004 CHM 0.7 Mb

The vast majority of Oracle SQL books discuss some syntax, provide the barest rudiments of using Oracle SQL, and perhaps include a few simple examples. It might be enough to pass a survey course, or give you some buzz words to drop in conversation with real Oracle DBAs. But if you use Oracle SQL on a regular basis, you want much more. You want to access the full power of SQL to write queries in an Oracle environment. You want a solid understanding of what's possible with Oracle SQL, creative techniques for writing effective and accurate queries, and the practical, hands-on information that leads to true mastery of the language. Simply put, you want useful, expert best practices that can be put to work immediately, not just non-vendor specific overview or theory. Updated to cover the latest version of Oracle, Oracle 10g, this edition of the highly regarded Mastering Oracle SQL has a stronger focus on technique and on Oracle's implementation of SQL than any other book on the market. It covers Oracle s vast library of built-in functions, the full range of Oracle SQL query-writing features, regular expression support, new aggregate and analytic functions, subqueries in the SELECT and WITH clauses, multiset union operators, enhanced support for hierarchical queries: leaf and loop detection, and the CONNECT_BY_ROOT operator, new partitioning methods (some introduced in Oracle9i Release 2), and the native XML datatype, XMLType. Mastering Oracle SQL, 2nd Edition fills the gap between the sometimes spotty vendor documentation, and other books on SQL that just don't explore the full depth of what is possible with Oracle-specific SQL. For those who want to harness the untapped (and often overlooked) power of Oracle SQL, this essential guide for putting Oracle SQL to work will prove invaluable.

Expert Oracle JDBC Programming by R.M. Menon

Title: Expert Oracle JDBC Programming
Author: R.M. Menon
ISBN: 159059407X
Publisher: Apress
Book Binding: Paperback
Category: Computer
Books: Database
Format: PDF
Pages: 708 pages
Size: 2.89 MB
Summary:
With Oracle in the process of de-supporting SQLJ, JDBC is now really the only recommended means of interfacing between Java and Oracle. Consequently, this book is a must have for any developer building an Oracle Java application. Many Java developers tend to treat Oracle as a "black box"; as a consequence, developers tend to write incorrect, non-scalable code. If you don't intimately know how Oracle works and expects you to program, you might avoid Oracle extensions to the standard for fear of your code becoming database-dependent. If you give in to that fear, you'll miss out on the extensive out-of-the-box functionality that Oracle offers. This book teaches you how to build efficient, high-performance, and robust Oracle-based JDBC applications. You'll discover the full details of Oracle's implementation of the JDBC 3.0 standard (what it supports, what it doesn't and what extensions Oracle provides), and more. This book tackles issues head-on, detailing concisely and clearly the vital details of Oracle's architecture and mode of operation that directly impact the manner in which JDBC applications should be written. Only when armed with this knowledge, a willingness to exploit the database to its full potential in your JDBC code, and the ability to use Oracle's SQL and PL/SQL features when appropriate, is it possible to write truly efficient, robust, scalable and high performance applications.
